Formerly the USS Norris, launched in February 1945. She was converted to DDE configuration with the replacement of a forward 5 inch mount by trainable Hedgehog mount. She was sold to Turkey in July 1974 for cannibalization to keep Turkey's other Gearings in service. Later that month, however, its sister ship, the former USS Harwood, which was sold to Turkey the previous year, was bombed by the Turkish Air Force during the invasion of Cyprus, and it was decided to replace her with the Norris.
She received six 40mm guns, two of which were replaced by a 35mm twin mount in 1980. The main difference between Kocatepe and the other Turkish Gearings is the lack of an ASROC launcher. Like the other Gearings, VL Sea Sparrow hass been considered for enhanced air defense.
