The first warships of noteable size built in Turkey, in 1972, they are based on the simple USS Claud Jones, a destroyer escort designed for mass production in case of war in the 1950s. They were not very successful in USN peacetime service, but were suitable for Turkey's first essay in frigate design. Though their sonars are lousy, they have the capability to carry a helicopter, which enables them to act as forward ASW platforms.
