This singleton ship took over the mantle of Flagship of the Italian Navy from the Andrea Dorias, on which it is based, only to have the title taken away upon the arrival of the Garibaldi.
Basically a scaled-up A. Doria, the design was radically recast when it ws realised that the Doria's helicopter facilities were far too small. The result is a very effective surface combatant. Of note is the Italian navy's policy of putting as many guns on a ship as possible, the Veneto having no less than 8 3inchers.
