Similar in most respects to the Libyan Assad/Wadi class from which they are derived, these four ships were built between 1986 and 1987 but never delivered, first because of various embargoes, then Iraq's inability to pay for them, then Iran's declaration that any Iraqi vessels passing through the Straits of Hormuz would be considered hostile, and now because of the Gulf War. They have been put up for resale by the shipyard and if no buyer is found, will probably be sold for scrap.
This would be a loss because these are extremely well armed and capable vessels, improving on the Libyan standard with more SSMs (Although of an older type) and an Aspide SAM launcher.
